What a pleasure to read critic Michael Lista's appreciative review of Sailing to Babylon in the National Post, a major newspaper in Canada. In this first response to the book in print, Lista considers "the enduring beauty of [the long poem] 'Quarry Park,' and of Sailing to Babylon as a whole." My warm thanks to Michael!
I was delighted to learn this morning that my book Sailing to Babylon is on the shortlist in Canada for the Governor General's Literary Award in Poetry. All the finalists are invited to read at the Atwater Library in Montreal, on Thursday, November 1, 2012, at 7 pm. (I'll be there.) The winner will be announced in early November.
Daryl Hine died on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. He was not the most beloved, or the most widely read, but he was the finest Canadian poet of his generation, and may well have been the best Canadian poet of the twentieth century. Click "Read more" below for more information.
Check out the audio file in which I read the poem "Northwest Passage" at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference in the summer of 2005. Just click on the Poems tab and scroll down to the poem, then click on the audio file.
